Who Loved First
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
“This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins” (1 John 4:10).
In questioning which came first, the chicken or the egg, we can get into some silly banter. It can be a good bit like the old Abbott and Costello “Who’s on First” comedy routine of the 1930s.
But when it comes to God’s love for us, it’s really no laughing matter.
Jesus loved us first. He showed us what real love looks like by dying on the cross when none of us deserved that kind of love.
And He didn’t complain. He never said, “That sorry old Priscilla! Look at what she just did! Can you believe it? This is the thanks I get?”
No.
He keeps loving me. Faithfully.
And you, too.
Some people still reject Him.
I’ll never understand that.
