Asleep At The Wheel

"So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Watch for his return and stay sober." 1 Thessalonians 5:6

“Daddy!  Wake up!”

It was early in the morning, about 3:00 a.m. and Daddy had been driving all night.  He was unable to find a hotel for his family of five to spend the night on the way to California and kept driving.

I was just eight years old, and everyone else was asleep in the car.  It was after all nighttime. But God stirred me awake in time to see the car heading off the road as Daddy nodded off to sleep.

God’s timing is perfect, merciful, loving.  Daddy was horrified that he had fallen asleep with nearly tragic results, and grateful God woke him up.  He was then able to pull off the road and get the proper rest before finishing the journey.

It smacks loudly of today, doesn't it?

The difference is that God has sent many a bullhorn to tell His Church—us—to wake up.  But many still sleep.  Their car has gone off the road into the ravine and yet they still sleep with their hands clutching the wheel as though nothing at all is wrong.  Their children lie bruised and bloodied in the backseat, but they can't even see them.  They are sound asleep.

I wonder.

Are you sound asleep?  Am I?

I have had to ask myself this question and God has lovingly showed me each day new areas of sin in my life requiring repentance.  That is, indeed, the blessing.  He lovingly shows us.  It is His light within that brings change, softening, repentance.  The world desperately needs that!  The Church desperately needs that!

We cannot be silent or complacent at a time like this.  The Person of Love and Truth commands us to speak whether it is comfortable or not.

Ephesians 4:25 says, "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another."

Christian!  Wake up!

Goodnight, Runners.
