Spiritual Pride
"Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall." 1 Corinthians 10:12
"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Proverbs 16:18
"Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the Lord." Zephaniah 2:3
Spiritual pride. Sadly, you'd likely find my whole family tree if you were to look the term up in the dictionary.
Yours, too?
Funny how the flaws most blatant in the lives of others are the ones most glaring in our own lives—yet we fail to see them there, in us.
Spiritual pride.
It reaches an entirely different level when allowed to permeate our churches. Have you noticed that the most ungodly practices in many a church are defended tooth and nail? The passion is ferocious. But, where is that passion for the soul in need of a Savior? Where is that passion for the lost? Or, is that the very reason used to defend every evil practice?
We've memorized the verse. We've even seen example after example of it demonstrated. So, why can't we see it in us, in the practices of our church?
When we opine on Scripture more than read it, we have lost our way.
When we speak more than we do, we have lost our way, too (Proverbs 10:19).
Father in Heaven,
Please remove the scales from our eyes and the calluses from our hearts that we may recognize pride in ourselves and in Your Church, and be refined by You.
Amen.
Goodnight, Runners.
