A Convenient Generation
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you." Genesis 12:1
Fast food, microwave ovens, e-mail, virtual business, tele-medicine . . . we live in a generation ruled by convenience. We've gotten so accustomed to convenience that we even have our baby deliveries scheduled in advance, at a time most convenient for both the family and the doctor.
Gone are the days when people dropped everything to help a neighbor or family member in need. Nowadays we only help our families and neighbors when it is convenient for us. If we must go even the slightest bit "out of our way" for someone else, we tend to let the whole world know about it. We often decline invitations simply because they're inconvenient or "out of the way".
We shove an iPad in a toddler's face rather than engage them in conversation or teach them something, anything of meaning or importance.
It seems even God and His Church have become inconveniences.
Can you imagine Abram rejecting God's invitation to leave Haran with his wife, Sarai, and nephew, Lot, because it was too inconvenient? After all, Abram was 75 years old and probably had a pretty nice routine there in Haran with the rest of his family. It would be pretty inconvenient to uproot at that ripe old age and go somewhere when he didn't even know where the somewhere was going to be.
I wonder.
Have you heard God's call on your life? You know the one. It's that gentle whisper, that nudge, the one you know is God. And, have you found God's call on your life to be inconvenient?
No one in all the world has been more inconvenienced that Jesus, so He understands.
But, you were worth it.
Goodnight, Runners.
