When Your Car Breaks Down on the Road of Life
"Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea." 2 Corinthians 11:25
I
often wonder just what God was doing in the life of Paul through these trials, and that night and day he
was adrift at sea.
Was
He speaking softly to Paul’s heart in the quiet beneath the stars? Or perhaps
He was quickening his spirit and revealing some small piece of His divine plan. It is a mystery to me.
God
always knows just exactly what we need and when we need it, though we fail to
understand fully all that He is doing in and through our circumstances.
One
New Year’s Eve, my brother’s car broke down on the road from Canada to Texas. My brother, sister and I were college students returning to school after visiting our parents in Saskatchewan during
Christmas break. Fortunately, there was a mechanic’s shop that happened to be
open all night on New Year's Eve in North Dakota.
I did a lot of praying
and wondering about why this happened on this particular night and in this
particular small town. I’ll probably never fully understand all of the reasons.
But what I do know is that God got my attention long enough to speak softly to
my heart.
And
I listened.
Is
your car broken down on the road of life? Perhaps you’ve been adrift for more
than a whole night and a day. Is God speaking softly to your heart?
Maybe
it’s time you listened.
Goodnight, Runners.
