The Favorite
"But if you do what is wrong, you will be paid back for the wrong you have done. For God has no favorites." Colossians 3:25
Have you ever been the favorite?
When I was a kid, I thought I was the favorite--my great granddaddy's favorite. I was sure of it. Christmas of 1975, my sweet great granddaddy scooped me up in his lap, gave me a big kiss on the cheek, folded a silver dollar wrapped in foil in my pudgy little hand and said, "How's my favorite great granddaughter?"
I had always suspected it, but now there was proof. He said it. No need for debate. I was Queen Bee, King of the Hill, All That and a bag of chips. So, naturally, I hopped down from Great Granddaddy's lap with my spoil, strutting my peacock feathers and clucking my status as favorite to anyone and everyone who would listen. But, rather than the "ooh" and "ahh" I was expecting, my elder cousins simply patted me on the head, smiled and winked.
I noticed that they, too, had shiny foil-wrapped silver dollars. Confused, I watched Great Granddaddy from around the corner. To my shock and dismay, he was scooping up all of the cousins into his lap--even the big ones! Not only that, but I heard him tell my sister she was his favorite, too!
While I was only the favorite for a few minutes, I learned something.
Favorites think they can do no wrong. They think they are beyond anyone's discipline. They have vision that only sees themselves, and they take no notice of you unless you are looking at them.
Proverbs 11:27 tells us, "If you search for good, you will find favor; but if you search for evil, it will find you!"
Sometimes when we receive favor from God we tend to think we're His favorite. We think we don't have to follow the rules, that we can skate by without the same consequences for our actions that others receive. But, while our God is loving and merciful, He is just. He is no respecter of persons. He is impartial and doesn't play favorites.
And, we shouldn't, either (James 2:9).
Goodnight, Runners.
