Watch Your Mouth
“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Ephesians 4:29
Do you have a speech problem?
Perhaps you don’t use profane speech or take God’s name in vain, but what about the way you speak about others?
Matthew 5:22b-23 says, “If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.”
James 3:9-10 talks about the evil from our tongues when it says, “Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!”
And, what about the manner in which we speak about those who serve in public office. We may not always agree with how things are being done on our behalf, but note what Scripture says in Acts 23:5b, “for the Scriptures say, ‘You must not speak evil of any of your rulers.’”
Let us remember the words of Proverbs 15:28, which says, “The heart of the godly thinks carefully before speaking; the mouth of the wicked overflows with evil words.”
And, may we also remember the words of I Peter 3:10, “For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.”
