When the Answer Never Comes
“Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” 2 Corinthians 3:8-9
Have you ever prayed for something really hard for a long, long time without getting the answer you wanted?
Sometimes when we pray, asking God for something, we are sure that He will answer the way we want because we believe our prayer to be the best possible outcome. We believe our prayer to be in keeping with God’s will for the situation. We can’t imagine anything else.
In the passage of Scripture above, Paul couldn’t imagine a better outcome, either. But, there was a better outcome, and God revealed that to Paul.
Sometimes our prayers are hindered because of disobedience (1 Peter 3:7).
Sometimes our prayers go unanswered because we waver in our belief. Our loyalty is divided (James 1:6-7).
But, Jesus taught us that we should always pray and never give up in the Parable of the Persistent Widow (Luke 18:1-8).
2 Peter 3:9 tells us, “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.”
May we continue to pray, leaving the outcome in the hands of our loving and merciful God.
