Hunger Monster
“For the world offers only a
craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in
our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from
this world.” I John 2:16
There is a bedtime story that has been told in our house when my children were little about a hunger monster. In the story, the hunger monster consumes everything in its path, and everything in sight. It gets bigger and bigger until it finally explodes into a pile of nothing.
There is a bedtime story that has been told in our house when my children were little about a hunger monster. In the story, the hunger monster consumes everything in its path, and everything in sight. It gets bigger and bigger until it finally explodes into a pile of nothing.
Sadly,
we’ve all known people like that. They eat
and drink anything and consume everything they see without a thought or care
for how it will affect them in the long run.
Their lives are devoted to pleasure, and they have no thought of
responsibility or the things of God. We
call it living in the fast lane, or living only for the moment.
But,
God calls this a life of death and destruction.
When we continue this type of life, the Bible tells us exactly what will
happen in Proverbs 29:1, “Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept
criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.”
Proverbs 14:12, the Bible tells us, “There
is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.”
Proverbs 22:4 tells us how to fight off the Hunger Monster. It says, “True humility and fear of the LORD
lead to riches, honor, and long life.”
May you resist the craving for the
pleasures of this world, may you beat the Hunger Monster through true humility
and a reverential fear of the Lord today.
