A Prayer When Tempted by Suicide
If you are reading this now and contemplating suicide, you have reached the pinnacle of despair. I don’t know what has brought you to this place, but God does. And, believe it or not, He still has a plan for your life—in the midst of your desperation, pain, hurt, and desire to end the beautiful life He has given to you. He will never stop loving you.
He is the way to life. In your temptation to commit such a final act, remember that countless people have felt the desperation you feel right now. Countless people are feeling desperate along with you right now.
David was one man in the Bible who felt this same desperation. He had many troubles—some he had brought upon himself, some he had not. Here is what David said in Psalm 34:6, “In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.”
The Lord can do the same for you. Would you please pray with me?
Dear Heavenly Father,
I am feeling such a deep since of pain and despair that I cannot bear it any longer. I give my feelings of pain, despair, and suicide to You. I lay them at Your feet.
Father, I give you all of my burdens and cares because I know that You care for me (I Peter 5:7).
I thank You that You have a plan for my life here on earth that is a plan to prosper me and not to bring disaster. It is a plan to give hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).
Father, help me to have the faith to believe that—and to act upon it—one hour at a time, one day at a time.
Forgive me, Father, for doubting Your love for me. Draw me close to You, and remove the evil one far from my mind, body, spirit and emotions. Help me to forgive others who continue to hurt me.
I praise You for Your infinite love for me, and ask all these things in Your holy name.
AMEN.
