A Prayer for Companionship
When God made Adam, He recognized that it was not good for Adam to be alone. That is why God made Eve—to be a companion. God does not want us to live our lives in isolation. He wants us to enjoy companionship.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 talks about some other reasons why companionship is important, “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”
Maybe you understand that all too well, and you long desperately to have that companion these verses are talking about. In your desire and haste for companionship, you must be careful to heed the Bible’s warning regarding the character and type of companion we should seek, lest we end up with grief and pain as our companion.
2 Timothy 2:22 tells us, “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.”
If this is the type of companion you seek, take it to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to guide you in revealing the true character of each person you meet.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We long for companionship that is pure and true, with a heart longing after You.
Test our hearts and prove that our motivation is right, Father. We thank You for serving as the perfect example of companionship through the person of Your son, Jesus Christ.
Help us to be a pure and true companion to others. Keep our hearts honest and right before You, Father. Give us wisdom, understanding and discernment always in choosing companionship.
Lead us in Your pathway of truth, and protect us from any and all evil influences, Father.
Father, protect us, and may no evil thing be allowed to enter our heart, body, mind, spirit, or emotions. Bring into our lives the companion or companions of Your choosing.
We ask these things in Your perfect, holy name.
AMEN.
