A Prayer for Time of Unexpected Death
When I was a little girl, I had a friend named Renee. Renee had a beautiful singing voice, even though she was very young. She proudly and confidently sang her praises to God before the church congregation nearly every Sunday morning.
Suddenly, and without warning, Renee developed leukemia and died. She was only eight years old. Hers was a life so full of love, zeal, and promise. It was hard for anyone to understand why she was taken from us.
Yet, in all our misunderstanding and grief, God understands. He has a plan that has at its center our ultimate good—an ultimate blessing. We can be sure of that.
I don’t have Renee with me here on earth, but she is still accomplishing God’s purpose—long after her death. She still inspires me. She still motivates me. God is still using the life she lived.
Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”
Dear Heavenly Father,
Your name is most holy. We come before You asking for comfort, peace, and understanding in this time of unexpected death.
Father, we do not understand why ____________________________ was taken from us. Yet, we do know that You are working in and through our loss to bring about Your divine plan and purpose.
Comfort us in our grief and loss.
Grant us wisdom and understanding.
Grant us peace.
Help us to lean completely and totally upon You during this time and always, Father. Forgive us for our failures, Lord, and teach us Your ways.
We thank You and praise You for protecting us and providing for us in ways we do not understand during this crisis.
We ask all these things in Your precious, holy name.
AMEN.
