A Prayer for Laughter
The book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is a time for every purpose under Heaven. There is “a time to cry and a time to laugh” (Ecclesiastes 3:4).
When we feel in the depths of despair, it is often hard to remember what laughter felt like. As Proverbs 14:13 says, “Laughter can conceal a heavy heart, but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.”
Have you experienced that verse? Do you long for the despair and heaviness of your heart to dissipate? Job did, too. He was a man of integrity. He feared and loved God, yet he was suffering in the worst way.
In the midst of Job’s pain and despair, he was able to remind us of God’s infinite mercy and goodness toward us.
Job 8:21 says, “He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.”
If you long for laughter to return to your life, you can ask God for it.
Luke 6:21 tells us, “God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh.”
In God’s perfect timing, you will laugh again.
Dear Heavenly Father,
How we long for sweet laughter to return to our lips and to our heart. We praise You that we have known laughter in days past. We thank You for the sorrow and despair we experience, for we know that through it all You are working about Your perfect, precious, and merciful will in our lives.
Help us to return from the pit of despair and know the true joy, happiness, peace, and, yes, laughter that can only come by knowing and serving You completely.
Forgive us for dwelling on our own circumstance and not looking to the needs of others. May we truly be Your servants in everything we say and do, Father.
We ask all these things in Your precious, holy name.
AMEN.
