A Mighty Defense
Many frightening battles that we face require a defense—an advocate for our cause. What better defense could you possibly have than the Creator of the Universe? There is none.
The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:7, “For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him.”
In the story of David and Goliath, we find one of the most dramatic pictures of God’s defense at work in the lives of His faithful. 1 Samuel 17 tells the story.
The Philistine army was camped across from the Israelites. Goliath was a Philistine giant, standing over nine feet tall. Day after day, Goliath taunted the Israelites, asking for one man to fight. If the man defeated Goliath, the Philistines would become the slaves of the Israelites; but, if Goliath defeated the man, the Israelites would become Philistine slaves.
Jesse, David’s father, had been helping to tend sheep and run errands while his three oldest brothers were fighting against the Philistines. One day, Jesse sent David with some food for his brothers, and asked him to report back as to how they were doing. When David learned about Goliath, he told King Saul that he wanted to fight Goliath. David’s brothers and the King scoffed at David, but he was undeterred. David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” (I Samuel 17:37)
David gathered five smooth stones, placed them in his sling, and the God of the Universe enabled him to defeat Goliath, without spear or sword.
Do you have faith in God? If so, you have the greatest defender in the Universe on your side in defense of you today.
My prayer for you today is that you would trust in God to mightily defend your cause, and that you would have the best week you've ever had in your life.
