Joyful Pay Day Someday
My family comes from a long line of Baptist Preachers. My father's great uncle was a humble and grateful man named George W. Truett. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas from 1897 to 1944. My father is a preacher. My silly Uncle Billy is a preacher, and my brother is also a preacher. May God bless them all. Needless to say, I've heard a bit of theology and a few sermons in my brief 42 years.
One of the most remarkable sermons I've ever heard was a sermon written by a young contemporary of George W. Truett, pastoring in Memphis, Tennessee, the Rev. R. G. Lee. This sermon was entitled, "Pay Day Someday," and Rev. Lee preached the sermon over 1200 times during his lifetime. I never heard R. G. Lee preach the sermon, but I heard my father preach it on several different occasions. The title says it all, and the message has never lost its power or importance.
The sermon recounts the lives of Biblical characters: Naboth, Ahab, Jezebel, and Elijah. It discusses the providence of God in the form of retribution for sin, but it also tells of God's mercy, love, and forgiveness because Jesus Christ gave us His life that we might avoid the pay day we truly deserve.
I don't know about you, but there are many times in life when I mutter to myself, "That sure wasn't fair!" or "I wish someone else had seen that!"
But, the Bible reminds us that someone does see it all--the good and the bad. Job 34:21 says, “For God watches how people live; he sees everything they do."
Not only does God see it all, but He pays us according to all that He sees. Job 34:11 says, "He repays people according to their deeds. He treats people as they deserve."
There is no issue of overpayment or underpayment with Christ. He pays us perfectly. “Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds." Revelation 22:12
Yes, there is a pay day someday for all of us. May you look forward to yours with joyful anticipation, and may you have the best week you've ever had in your life.
