Joy in Letting Go

Recently, I had the privilege of learning about raccoons with my daughter, Meredith. A particularly interesting fact about raccoons is their affinity for shiny objects.

One story we read told of a raccoon that spied a gold watch. When the owner discovered that the raccoon had taken the watch, he pursued the little robber and the spoil. Upon capturing the rascal, the owner found that the raccoon still held the gold watch tightly in its clutches. The raccoon was tranquilized, yet still held the watch tightly in its grasp! The watch owner had to use a pair of pliers to pry the watch out of the unconscious raccoon's paw.

Holding onto things is not necessarily wrong. It is what we hold onto that is often wrong. Are you holding onto something that you shouldn't be holding onto? Maybe it's a person, a thing, or a situation. Like the raccoon, have you refused to release your grip?

The Bible says in Hebrews 4:14, “So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.”

There is nothing wrong with holding on tightly, as long as the who or what we are holding onto is our faith in Jesus Christ.

Do you have a raccoon hold on God? If so, releasing people, problems and situations will be no problem. We can ask God to help us to release our grip on everything else and strengthen our grip on Him.

I am praying that you will let go of your difficulties this week and hold tightly to God. May you have the best week you've ever had in your life.

I may not get too many things in life right, but I sure as heck have that clinging to God part down. ;-)
